Do you find this review helpful? Blind Pinot Tasting : Sea spray, oak and iodine. The palate has impact and while there is initial heat it calms down across the length and finishes with richness and depth.
Really quite good. Typical Lagavulin antiseptic iodine, peat and soft saltspray, along with orangepeel, and green-cut grass, and old medicine cupboard. The taste is clean and elegant, showing peat moss, pinewood forest, savory salt spray and rock pool, along with mellow notes of light creamy butter and mild caramel.
All this, while clearly Isla, and very much in character Lagavulin. Very expressive - very impressive! This is very clearly Lagavulin, but emphasizing the subtle sweetness, there is distinctly red fruit running through this it is PX finish, after all , and a gentle ham.
Nose : Raisin up front, with a mild background of peat. Dried fruits, fruitwood smoke. Black currants. Green sap, with a hint of banana? Palate : Clearly sherried, with lots of concentrated dark fruits, but now the peat I was missing in the nose comes through with nice balance. Finish : Overly sweet, with the usual cast of sherry characters. The peat gets somewhat lost. With Water : A drop of water reveals a sulfury reek of banana peel, which dissipates, but not before I resolve to avoid the water with this one.
Overall : Okay. The palate has a nice balance of fruit and smoke, but the sherry overwhelms the traditional Lagavulin character which I would have said was hard to do on the nose and finish. The PX sweetness is already getting to be a bit much at that point, so I can only imagine what the uncut stuff is like. I think the sherry adds some interesting complexity that complements the relatively subdued peat of Lag I like the DE so much I bought two bottles of it this year.
